The petrochemical industry, primarily referring to the production of gasoline, kerosene, diesel, heavy oil, and liquefied petroleum gas from petroleum refining, is a major supplier of current primary energy sources. In 1995, China produced 80 million tons of fuel oil. Currently, worldwide consumption of oil and natural gas accounts for approximately 60% of total energy consumption; due to China's high coal consumption, oil consumption is less than 20%. The energy provided by the petrochemical industry is mainly used as fuel for automobiles, tractors, airplanes, ships, and boilers, with a small amount used as domestic fuel. Energy is a factor that restricts the development of China's national economy. The petrochemical industry consumes approximately 8.5% of total energy, and energy consumption should be continuously reduced.
